This book is so, so real about depression, anxiety, and family issues that I had to put it down and cry a couple of times. I was so moved by Darius's heartache and disconnectedness, and also by his unwillingness to give up. His voice was so distinct and even funny, but the narrative never pulled any punches about the hardships he faced. It was really well-balanced and I sometimes felt like a teenager again, meeting a friend removed in time and space (and reality, obviously).

I was really happy to read an Iranian-American perspective. Sometimes books remind you not just about the richness of individual experience and diversity, but equally about the universality of suffering--and the human connections that relieve suffering, one hug or smile or conversation at a time.
