Darius Kellner is an outcast. He feels like he is a disappointment to his family, his heritage, and himself. He faces bullies regularly at school, a father with high expectations, and a battle with mental illness that threatens to overtake him at times. Darius thinks life couldn't get much worse, and then surprise! He's finds out he'll be headed to visit family in Iran. He knows very little about his Iranian heritage, and unlike his overachieving younger sister, he doesn't even speak Farsi. While in Iran, Darius will discover new sides to himself while still facing his old demons. He'll meet the family he's only ever known via video chat and make an important new friend who will teach him all about the about the places that were empty in his life. This story is enchantingly written. The reader will find themselves transported to another world that has more in common with American life than they might think. Darius has real struggles and the reader will sometimes feel the claustrophobia of inhabiting his headspace. This book will be a great conversation starter about mental health while also acknowledging how difficult life can be, no matter your other baggage, when you feel like you don't belong.
