Darius The Great Is Not Okay is a character-driven YA Contemporary that follows Darius Kellner and the journey he undergoes as he tries to find himself and where he fits in when he & his family take a trip to Iran to visit relatives!
Khorrma's debut really focuses on the dynamics between characters and how they differ or represent something different for each person. For example, the wonderful friendship between Darius & Sohrab, the unspoken, complex dynamic between Darius's mother & his grandfather, & the dynamic between Darius and his father.
The use of a first person POV really allows us to understand Darius, his view o of the world, and the depth to him as a character! The themes, connections between family and friends, exploration of Iranian culture, etc. are all explored in such a unique way through Darius's perspective.

My only minor critique is that moments of dialogue or internal thoughts were a bit repetitive. Additionally because this novel is very character-driven, some elements of plot, setting, & a few minor characters, do seem a little underdeveloped.

However, above all Darius The Great Is Not Okay, is not a debut to miss!
Character-development, themes of family, friendship, and especially, acceptance of ones-self are such important elements to the story that truly make it such an impactful read! The depth to this novel from its characters, the writing, and development to the story, make Khorram's debut a must read!
