I was immediately captivated by the premise of this book. It promises to be an incredible journey with twists and turns, betrayal, deception, intrigue. I'm always up for a good pirate book too--there's so much promise with such a setting and these characters.

Upon starting to read, the writing isn't necessarily gripping. It seems more amateurish, a little clunky and obvious, but will most likely appeal to the younger audience its meant for while offering the grit and intrigue that will appeal to older YA fans. The pacing is also a little slow to allow for exposition and a lot of detail--which borders on info-dumpy at points.

But, the characters seem like the most intriguing aspect of this book, and I love that they're already set up with their own strong motives from the beginning. I'm curious to see if the storytelling will smooth out once it gets past the exposition. Definitely interested!
