I think for a debut Crossbones did a pretty good job at setting up this author's prowess as a writer. You can definitely tell she has the knack for it, but like most debuts, the writing does need to be edited a bit more. I found myself falling out of the story more often than I'd like to admit, so there's still plenty of growth.
One of the indirect detriments to my own enjoyment was the constant comparison to Pirates of the Caribbean meets The Hunger Games. Both stories made up a HUGE portion of my childhood, so I went in with pretty high expectations, which again isn't really the fault of the author but rather my own. I found myself comparing a lot of the scenes, and it got to the point where I really didn't like the comparison actually. I think if I went in with a neutral, unbiased perspective this whole fiasco could have been avoided. Ultimately, that wasn't the case, but I am really excited to try the other works this author releases because I have a feeling she will grow in a wonderful way.
