This books is the first in a fantasy trilogy revolving around a competition known as the "Trials." This competition involves a fight to the death to gain ownership of the Bone Crown and power over the island throne.
We have three major protagonists in this book, and we follow each of them. There is Csilla who is tired of being doubted and transpired against because of her age. She wants to win to prove her naysayers wrong and be crowned Pirate Queen. Then, we have Kane who wants to leave his tarnished past behind and win something in a legitimate manner. And finally there is Lorelai who wants to simply avenge her mother's death.
