I found the story and characters solidly just okay. Not terrible, just nothing special. The plot was alright but I found it very easy to guess who was the murderer (I know YA books aren't as thick as adult book but they're not little kids, it should be a little less obvious in my opinion). The ending also felt a bit odd to me and a little unfinished (I don't see anything about a second book, but it's possible the ending was meant to set up for another).
I wasn't a fan of how Emsy's girlfriend was handled, it felt like she was almost immediately shoved away and forgotten about.
The art though is beautiful. I thought the facial expressions where especially well done. I also thought Katia was extremely cool and would have loved to see more of her.
It was a really fun read to welcome in the fall season since the book takes place in the fall and there are some lovely fall foliage illustrations plus of course all the witchyness.
