This was my first YA graphic novel and I’m so glad I gave it a try! It was a very different experience to absorb illustrations while simultaneously reading the text. In particular to Coven, the story line was well suited for illustrations and was elevated by it.

In Coven, Emsy is a teen witch who has been living the life of a typical teenager in California. The story opens up with an image of her in love with her girlfriend and enjoying surfing. But when witches in her extended family are murdered with a witch hunter on the loose, her parents decide to move to New York to live near the protections of their coven. Emsy is understandably devastated and resentful of her witch roots.

The rest of the story delves into the world of witch covens and Emsy’s witch abilities, which she must master.

I thoroughly enjoyed this graphic novel and definitely recommend it to readers of YA and modern stories about witches.
