I’ve been on a graphic novel kick and I love Jennifer Dugan, so I was thrilled to get a copy of Coven from Bookish First.

What I loved: The subtle LGBTQIA rep felt well done. I also liked the high school setting and dialogue coupled with teen angst that felt realistic without being over the top. The story was easy to follow which isn’t always the case in graphic novels, so that made it much more fun to read.

This is a modern, witchy read that wasn’t super predictable at the end.

Where I wanted more: This didn’t quite have the type of hook drawing me through that I need to stray really invested in a graphic novel. Everything felt a little too surface level and I wanted more depth from the characters, plot and setting.

It’s a nice and quick read with beautiful imagery and fun for fall, and may work well for folks used to the graphic novel format.
