There was no waiting around to get into this graphic novel- it came out the gate with a bang. A few pages in and I was hooked - immediately interested in Emsy and her relationship with Joss, what this mysterious murder was all about, her elemental skills, and what New York would look like for her when she returned.
It's not often that I feel connected to characters in a graphic novel, mainly because I often find the building lack luster. This was NOT the case with Coven though. Emsy was developed fast and with skill, and the introduction of her partners in wichery- Ben and Ash- I even got to feel a pull towards both of them.
I was stumped, by the way, and had the bad witch pegged incorrectly... which I loved. It's a bore when you can easily figure it out.
The illustrations were beautiful, and on a re-read I was able to pick up on a few clues in the imagery.
I'm hopeful for a series with this one because I'd really like to find out more about the Coven, Emsy's family, and watch her relationships develop.
