“Coven” is a graphic novel starring Emsy, a young teen witch who has not yet honed in on her powers. When friends of her family are killed, her parents insist on the family’s return to the coven, to stay together, to protect their loved ones. Emsy is comfortable, happy, and loving life where she is on the West Coast, where she can surf and spend time with her friends and her girlfriend. Bonus to this novel for queer representation! Emsy returns with her family against her wishes and becomes quickly intrenched in the coven. Her new friend, whose parents were killed, is grappling with his grief. He’d like to bring them back from the dead, which would tap into dark magic. And the story plays out from there.
The best element of this story is the graphic illustrations. The story is interesting and fun, but the illustrations make it so much more interesting.
