Because this book is part of a series, I wonder if it can be read as a stand alone or if I will be missing out on what comes before. From the short excerpt, it seems very interesting. Historical fiction is one of my favorite genres and I would be interested in seeing if Saffron and Gerhard will find their way back to each other from opposite sides of the war.
