This book is fantastic. The mystery-thriller elements are perfectly woven into the romance, or is it the other way around? There were times when I couldn't decide which element I wanted more of and it kept me turning pages to get more of everything.
Both the male and female leads are deeply flawed individuals with things in their pasts that they really need to deal with but refuse to acknowledge. It makes for an interesting dynamic when you're not sure which one is more deserving of a knock upside the head. And they're not the only characters whose psyche I wanted to delve deeper into. The number of characters that Ward manages to make you care about is impressive if you consider the relatively short length of this novel. There are so many things happening within the pages of this book that just make you want to give a hug to people and help them make it alright.
The ending was so impactful that I'm not even going to talk much about it beyond suggesting you prepare yourself for some heartbreak.
On a side note. If you, like me, have a slight loss of consciousness problem when reading really descriptive and realistic descriptions of injuries and gory stuff, then be warned that the first 60 pages or so of the book ended with me having to lie down for a few.
Even so, I can't wait to read more about the NBFD and find out the truth behind the fires that set the story in motion.
