Consumed by J.R. Ward was an exhilarating ride from the very first chapter and kept me hooked all the way through. The story immediately launches onto a firehouse call and our two main characters, Anne Ashburn and Daniel Maguire, adrenaline-junkie firefighters from the 499 company. These two have electric chemistry that is palpable throughout the entire book. The story ended up being more complex than I would have anticipated, including lots of soul-searching and identity development for multiple characters. Ward teased out the backgrounds for both Anne and Danny, stringing the reader along throughout the book. The writing is approachable, and other than a few deliciously steamy scenes, this would be an easy recommendation to anyone who wants a light romance with a whole lot of thrill. The cover is entrancing and the story is no less so. My only criticism is that the early chapters lead into a larger conspiracy that doesn't get fully developed in this book. The ending is abrupt, leaving the major antagonist out completely, which leaves a vague opening for future books in the series, but could be a turn off for readers who like clear resolutions.
