The author uses quite a bit of humor to set up the main character as a bumbling sort of idiot. It is easy for the reader to project themselves into the role of adventurer and feel all the uncertainty that goes along with being a visitor in a strange place.

I felt myself sympathizing with the main character as he begins his journey. Everyone who has ever traveled to a “strange” place will sympathize with what it feels like to be a tourist among the locals. For example, the main character spends quite a bit of money on a pair of boots assures they are the best only to have a local point out that they are completely worthless for the task.

The author does a great job showing the spiral of despair our bumbling idiots goes into once he is stuck on his slowly disintegrating piece of ice. He imagines talking to animals and you can feel his slow slip into insanity.

Overall I would recommend this book, however, it wrapped up a bit too quickly for me and left a few unanswered questions.
