I have never read anything like Compass by Murray Lee before and I was not sure what to expect. I ended up really enjoying the book. Initially, I liked the premise of this book and the inclusion of Inuit mythology. This is the first adventure travel book I have read, and the novel itself is smartly written. The arrogant and unlikable protagonist "Guy" finds himself stranded on a sheet of ice in the Arctic after it breaks away from the Floe Edge. Compass is a comedic look into the protagonist's psyche as he becomes more and more desperate in his situation. Although Guy is unlikeable, he is a fun character in the sense that he is very self-aware considering his knowledge of the Arctic is purely hypothetical. Since Lee has experience with Inuit communities, I found that his understanding of the Arctic and Inuit life really added to the story and his writing.
