Obnoxious white man who tells stories of dead white male adventurers goes on an adventure of his own, with grim (but well-deserved) results.

Based on the description, I was expecting this book to be scary, but it was mostly just darkly funny. The writing is beautiful, vividly evoking the scenery and the harsh realities the narrator finds himself in, generally through his own poor decisions. The book really hit its stride when Guy details his days and days on the ice, trying to keep track of time and survive long enough to be rescued. As unlikeable as the narrator is, I was still cheering him on and hoping things turned out well.

The ending was really something else. Not what I expected, but so much better. I'll be thinking about this book for a while. Definitely looking forward to seeing more from this author.
