This 448 page book is definitely a book for fans of the book CIRCE or THE SONG OF ACHILLES as well as readers who always enjoyed Greek and Roman mythology. The detailed family trees in the opening pages of the book might seem a bit overwhelming for readers who haven't read Circe or do not enjoy books about ancient Greece and stories of their gods. What is enjoyable about author Costanza Casati's book is the viewpoint of a strong female protagonist, Clytemnestra- the sister of Helen of Troy- in a dangerous world where failure to appear loyal to those in power can mean death. Clytemnestra is a name familiar to students of Greek mythology: she accepted a lover while her husband (and the King) was away at war. Upon his return, she killed him. Ruthless political power plays and the need to meet violence with more violence are part of the story development starting with the very first page. I would not be interested in reading this book, but I appreciate the research as well as the well crafted writing.
