The opening prose says it all about kings and queens, one heralded as gods, the other scorned. Its why so many retellings are the first books I pick up, letting the voices of antiquity women speak a new tale. Clytemnestra is just this sort of alluring tale opening with a young Clytemnestra and her sister Helen. Clytemnestra loves to hunt, which is encouraged by her father. Their duties as women are ‘survival, courage, and strength.” I love the aspect of the girls wrestling and exercising in the gymnasium (typically a men’s only activity). Meanwhile, Helen is insecure about her father’s love due to the rumors that Zeus raped their mother. As the story progresses, the sisters are at the cusp of their destinies. With lovely imagery, Casati paints a picture of ancient life. Her story about Clytemnestra feels unique and captivating, and I’ve read a few tales about her recently. Plus, the cover is stunning! I loved what I read and can’t wait to dive into the story further!
