I first read Heather Morris's other book - The Tattooist of Auschwitz and could not put it down. I immediately put this one on hold, and got to read it a couple months later. This book did not disappoint at all.

There are so many Holocaust books out there, which I love learning about it, but this one was about the Soviet gulags after the Holocaust ended. I knew nothing about them before I read the book, so it was quite interesting to learn about them. It is very apparent Heather Morris did her research before starting to write, so nothing about this book feels faked or forced. She manages to teach you about a new topic in an entertaining way, without you feeling like you're reading a history book.

I especially love the note after the book ends, where the author explains what is fact and what is fiction, and which real life figures she drew inspiration from for her character.
