Much Better than Tattooist

I was not a fan of the Tattooist of Auschwitz and had no desire to read anymore Heather Morris books. However, Cilka had intrigued me and when I saw she had her own novel, I had to read. Totally worth it!

In Tattooist, we see Cilka as a beauty who ends up becoming more than "friends" with guards, but I always suspected there was more to it. In her story, we see Cilka is damned if she does and damned if she doesn't--she could not win and it all comes down to how she looks. I find this story line so important as we often focus on the positives of beauty as a society, but never the downsides.

The situation Cilka finds herself in as a mistress of the Nazis is something not often talked about in history, but a very valid part of any conqueror taking the spoils of war. Unfortunately, Cilka's story shows how innocent victims of forced sex trafficking can be persecuted and what can happen after the war.
