Morris captures your attention from the very beginning in this novel about females in Nazi Concentration Camps. Beginning in January 1945, just when the Germans are retreating and prisoners see a possible chance of release when the Soviets enter the picture, the horror starts all over again for the poor women in the Auschwitz-Birkenau Concentration Camp who are found guilty of collaborating with the retreating German Army, are proclaimed enemies of the Soviet Union, and are sent to a prison in Krakow. At Krakow, they are given two choices--to sign papers agreeing to their collaboration or death.

Morris has a highly developed descriptive sense, and scenes, conversations, and heart-stopping emotions fill Chapter 2 detailing the people and conditions on the red "cattle train" that takes the prisoners to Vorkuta Gulag in Siberia. The unbelievable turns believable, and their destination only heightens the imaginable.

From the preview, this would definitely be a novel to be read. Morris has a talent like none I have read in a long time, and I look forward to reading her Tattooist of Auschwitz. Would LOVE to read the entirety of this novel!!!
