Having loved Heather Morris’s book, The Tattooist of Auschwitz, I knew I had to read this book. This gave me a very eye opening perspective of what happened after the war. This book follows a Cilka’s Kovachova’s journey from Auschwitz to a Soviet gulag and the hardships along the way. Cilka’s was imprisoned at Auschwitz at the age of 16. Cilka’s was 18 when Auschwitz was liberated by Soviet soldiers. However, Cilka is one of the many women who was found guilty the the Sovit soldiers of having having helped the Nazis--with no consideration of the circumstances Cilka and others like her found themselves to survive. Once at the””Vorkuta gulag in Sibera, she is to serve 15 years. This book discusses the hard life and what women were subjected to while living at the gulag. This topic is not one that has been often covered and from a woman’s perspective.
