I have read sever historical fiction and non fiction books about WWII and the Holocaust, but "Cilka's Journey" is the first one that I've read about a young girl who survived the Holocaust and beyond. This book is not for the "faint of heart" but is definitely one of my favorite books!
Cilka's story is a historical account of the life of a 16 year old girl living in Czechoslovakia when the Jewish people were herded up, killed, or imprisoned by the Nazi's during WWII. Cilka suffered the loss of her family and then abuse by the Nazi's while in prison camps- physically and mentally. Then once she the war ended and the Russians liberated her camp, she was sent to a prison in Siberia for "sleeping with the enemy."
Cilka does survive and has a good life but what this young lady endured is unspeakable.....
