I’m a sucker for dragons, but I loved that this book took dragons and redid it in such a fresh and unique way. The dragons we see in Chaos & Flame are so unique, with feathers and scales and unique personalities. Talon and his troops ride war drakes into battle, and I loved seeing the mighty dragon being tamed for House Dragon’s purposes.
In this book, different houses were split up according to different mythical beasts. We have house Kraken, Dragon, Cockatrice, Gryphon, Barghest, and Sphinx. The lord surrounding these houses was fascinating, and I loved that each house had its own colors, history, and titles of respect.
I went through a rollercoaster of emotions in this book. Even though we don’t get Caspian’s perspective, he was such a vivid character. Even though he pissed me off numerous times throughout the book, I couldn’t help but love him and trust he had a plan even through all his madness. I also had a strange relationship with Darling as she questioned her loyalty to House Kraken and came to realize that maybe House Dragon was not the enemy she’d been told it was her whole life. Talon is the forgotten younger brother, trying to claw his way out of the shadow and fearful for his brother’s sanity, and I felt for him deeply.
I forgive this book for playing with my emotions, but I desperately need the second one!!
