We are once again thrust into the world of Shadowhunters from days gone by. Chain of Gold begins our journey, beginning approximately 20 years after the events of The Infernal Devices, following the adventures of the children of our main characters from TID.
Cassie Clare writes all of her series as individual stories, so anybody can pick up any Showdowhunder series with no background knowledge about the shadow world and be able to follow along with no problem. That being said, it is incredibly helpful for this book if you've read the relevant stories from Bane Chronicles, Shadowhunter Academy, and Ghost of the Shadow Market as those all feature stories about our characters featured in Chain of Gold within the past several years and give more foundation to certain aspects, such as the formation of The Merry Theives and certain characters having drinking problems.
Although I did feel this story started off a bit slow, it is probably paced perfectly for somebody new to the shadow world. I am very intrigued by the plot and how everything is working together to drive toward the bigger plot points we are sure to see in the next books.
