This is the first installment of a new trilogy within Cassandra Clare's Shadowhunter universe, centered around the generation after the Infernal Devices trilogy in Victorian England.
We briefly met many of these characters in Clare's Ghosts of the Shadow Market, and it's a delight to spend more time with the younger Herondales, Carstairs, and Fairchilds. The friendships really shine in this book, especially those between James and Matthew, as well as Lucie and Cordelia. Familiar characters from the Infernal Devices series are certainly present, but they don't overshadow these new characters, nor is it necessary to have read the earlier books to be able to follow or enjoy this one.
An excellent read for any fans of YA, fantasy, or followers of the Shadowhunter world. I'm already looking forward to the next installment!
