I didn't read the summary before reading the excerpt, so it turns out this book is not about what I thought it would be from just the excerpt. It was a pretty slow start and seemed like a family drama, but I guess it's meant to be a mystery? I'm not really into either of those genres, but it should be a good read for someone.
