Effie and Henry are very young newlyweds who are just out of high school. They are on their honeymoon at Cape May, New Jersey. It is 1957 and these two virgins are shyly exploring and learning about each other. They are nervous but anxious to begin their lives together.
As a child Effie had spent many summers at Cape May but it is now the fall season and she did not consider that many shops and stores would be closed and that many neighbors were gone. She is bored and lonely and a bit disappointed in her honeymoon.
Henry is willing to stay but Effie wants to go home early.
Just when they resolved to leave early they noticed lights on at a home at the end of the street. They decide to stop and say hellos and from that moment on they are drawn into a world of sex, drinking and partying. As soon as they are invited to join the festivities they are exposed to eccentric behaviors that leave them shocked but intrigued. Excessive drinking, loose morals and explicit sexual behavior is all part of this story. Effie and Henry’s behaviors and impulsive decisions have a permanent impact on their marriage from that moment on.
I was surprised at the way the story developed but I also found this novel to be interesting and shocking. I did not necessarily care for the characters of Effie and Henry but I found this to be an intense and suspenseful story.
I received an ARC of this novel from the publisher and Bookish First. This is my honest and unbiased review.
