Repression and Consequence
The 1950s sometimes seem like a tough time to have come of age. The main characters in this one, Effie and Henry, are representations of that time period- newly married and repressed, not knowing much about the world outside their small town, and so young. When they are exposed to a new world of excess, can they ever go back to who they were?
This book isn't going to be for everyone- the amount of sex and infidelity crossed the line into too much, even for me, and I don't think I'm particularly sensitive to that. I understand that they were feeling free to explore and push boundaries in a way they never had before, but it sometimes felt gratuitous. Aside from that, I did enjoy this story, and appreciated the ending, showing how they lived with the repercussions of their honeymoon the rest of their lives.
