I was swept up in this beach read set in the 1950’s, of a young married couple on their honeymoon in Cape May. When they arrive at their beach house, the town is empty. Henry and Effie quickly realize everything is closed until next summer. They plan to call it quits and head home, when they see a couple of houses down there’s a huge party. They invite themselves over and enter a scene they never imagined being a part of.
Cape May takes the reader on a journey from dumb, young innocence to sultry, sexy lust. Chip Creek has created this story (with fantastic writing and gorgeous oceanic scenes) that demonstrates how quickly one action can lead to a dizzy, winding path into a pattern that will forever change the participants.
I loved the book, but it was too steamy for my taste. I’ll read a romance here and there, but I’m definitely not at this level. And keep in mind, this is coming from a person who loved The Heart’s Invisible Furies, a book I felt was fairly graphic, but served a greater purpose.
Cape May’s overall theme is: a life lead by passion and lust can be temporarily fulfilling, but one bite of the apple will lead to a life of insatiable desire. So I appreciate its purpose, but the way we got there, I wish my eyes/brain could unread some of the explicit detail.
I thought I was a fairly open-minded reader, but this book made me reconsider my identity. 😂 I’m sad I can’t give this book more stars because I enjoyed a lot of the beach and sailing scenes. But man, this was over the top.
