It’s 1957, and newlyweds Henry and Effie arrive in Cape May for their honeymoon. They soon run into a family friend of Effie’s, Clara, her partner Max, and his stepsister, Alma. Filled with booze and drama, the beach becomes their playground. Erotic and moving, CAPE MAY explores the commitment of marriage, sexuality, and the mistakes that can be made along the way.⁣

CAPE MAY put me in a summery mood, despite the fact that the book took place during the month of September. With Henry and Effie exploring themselves as a newlywed couple, Henry finds himself being less than committed after developing a lust for another character. There is definitely a decent amount of erotic (and pretty vulgar) writing in CAPE MAY, which I found a little nauseating. Of course, affairs aren’t cool, but CAPE MAY took the concept of an affair to a whole new level. I’m thinking that because this book is written in the perspective of Henry, the writing itself definitely isn’t as gentle and forgiving. I learned everything about Henry including his bowel movements (ew) and it honestly wasn’t my cup of tea. CAPE MAY definitely gives off 1950s vibes that put you in a summer mindset. ⁣
