This is an intriguing first look at a young couple on a honeymoon in Cape May, NJ during the off season. In fact, Henry and Effie are hard-pressed to find anyone there but themselves. What was at first unending love and first times at sex seems to quickly turn to boredom as Effie insists that they return home to Georgia a week early. Then one night, they look down the street and there are lights on in one of the houses. The couple boldly decide to stop there to say hello and before you know it, they are drawn into a birthday party for a young man named Scott whom Effie knew when she was a child. The characterizations are fascinating and make the reader want to know more about Clara and the kind of person she really is. Effie says she is a snob,but Henry seems mesmerized by her coarse language and effervescent personality. I would love to read more to find out how this newlywed couple fares at the hands of the much more sophisticated and worldly-wise Clara and her friends.
