We meet Effie and Henry at a turning point in their lives. There are as innocent as can be. It’s their wedding night, she is only 18 and Henry is 20. They have both just graduated high school and this is the first time they’ve even been alone together.
It’s the 1950s, neither has seen much of the world and they are on their honeymoon in Cape May. You can tell they probably wound up here because it was a free place to stay. Effie has a distant family member who begrudgingly let them stay.
But this is off season, at a beach town in New Jersey, there isn’t much to do. In addition, Effie seems to have some sad memories here.
She says the town is making her sad and she’d rather go home.
Henry reluctantly agrees to go home early.
Right before they are due to leave, they notice new people arriving next door. They decide to stop by to introduce themselves. Effie realizes her mistake very quickly when a childhood bully of hers answers the door. They are greeting warmly and invited in to join the party.
I like the writing style but I feel the book might be too sad for me. Based on the description, I’m guessing at least one of them cheats on the other. The course of a two week honeymoon is likely to change the entire future of this sweet, innocent couple.
