Wilbur Smith thrilled his readers with his Ballentyne series and now offers a closer look at one of his popular characters. While away at school, Mungo St. Clair received a letter informing him of the death of his father and urging him to return home as soon as possible. Upon his return home he learned that Windermere, the family estate, is in foreclosure after his father lost his fortune and took his own life. Chester Marion, his father’s lawyer, is now the owner of Windermere after involving his father in questionable contracts. The slaves have all been sold with the exception of Camilla, Mungo’s lover. She is owned by Marion, who moves her to New Orleans to serve as his mistress and entertain his business associates.

Mungo vows revenge when he discovers the full extent of Marion’s betrayal, but he would be coming up against a man of power and wealth. Seeking a fortune of his own, he goes to sea on a slave ship, where he discovers a love of the sea. What follows is a story of adventure that explores the slave trade and the poaching of ivory. It is a story of love and betrayal that explains the origins of the driven character that he will become.

Wilbur Smith has always been one of my favorite authors and this book does not disappoint. I would like to thank BookishFirst for providing this book for my review.
