I hadn't previously read any of Wilbur Smith's Ballantyne series, however, since this is a prequel to the series, it seems appropriate to read this one first. And, I will read the other books in the series, since I thoroughly enjoyed Call of the Raven. The story and writing transported me back to the 1840's, to tobacco and cotton plantations, from the booming city of New Orleans to the coast of Africa. Deep into the world of slave trading, with all it's dark terror and moral dilemma.

Mungo St John was born into a life of privilege, and had everything taken from him while he was studying at Cambridge, including Camilla, a family slave and the love of his life. This tragedy leads him to an unexpected life, consumed with a deep need for revenge. How far will he go to avenge his loss? Will he lose himself in the process?
