Wow! This book, beginning in England, then moving between North America and Africa, (and ending up, with a surprise, in England) is set in the 1840s. Mungo St. John is the son of a plantation owner, who discovers that his father has been murdered, and his plantation falls into the hands of a swindler, Chester Marion. Mungo is broke, and swears revenge.
Part love story, part swashbuckling adventure. Mungo’s character is many faceted - he is ruthless, sometimes uncaring about the suffering of others, at other times we see a softer side. His need for revenge is driving him, and when he finds out that the slave Camilla, who he had thought dead, is actually still alive, and belongs now to the man who murdered his father, that adds to his desperation to get back to America to rescue her, and ruin Chester.
The book is action packed, from beginning to end!
