The book was much hard to read then I expected when exploiting certain topics of slave trade. Although we know it is what happened, reading stories about it is heartbreaking. It took me a bit to get through the first part of the book and knowing what to expect.
My second thought was, Count of Monte Cristo. Having everything taken from MSJ and him seeking his revenge. I definitely wanted more of the story to revolve around his revenge. I felt like the author felt like he was running out of time so he rushed it, yet he drug on other areas of the story I did not care for.
This being said though, I know it was prequel to his other stories he has written and I have not read those stories, so to his fans this could have been perfect.
I was also surprised on the ending of Isaac's story. I was not expecting any of that.
All this to say, it takes time to dive in and if you can read about hard subjects that this book has to offer, then I say give it a chance. For me though, it was a bit rough and I was disappointed. I would have given it 2.5 stars but I rounded to 3.
