By the Book is a retelling of Jane Austen's Persuasion. The main character is a literature professor, Anne, who is striving for tenure. Anne is facing pressure over needing to get published and then she faces an additional hurdle when Anne learns that the new college president, Adam, is her ex-fiance.
Simply put, Anne's life is in disarray, and at first she's too muddled to see any relief. Life does begin to straighten out, Anne has a new man in her life, her friendship with another college professor Larry is positive, and Anne is also accepted for publishing. Even though Anne continues to be somewhat scattered in her love life, she really pulls it together for writing her book and for being an engaged college professor for her students. It's refreshing to be presented with a female character who can be a little loopy, or otherwise known as simply different, while at the same time she's on top of her professional game. You go, Anne!
This was such an enjoyable read. It was perfect for a weekend of feel good reading!
