In this contemporary retelling of Jane Austen's Persuasion, Anne Corey is an English professor at Fairfax University, and unfortunately she has been told she needs to have her book published in order to keep her job. Things continue to spiral out of her control as her ex-fiance Adam Martinez becomes the new president of the university and her father's health begins to fail. When Anne sees Adam again for the first time in thirteen years, she begins to realize she has never stopped loving him. In order to distract herself, she begins dating another man, but everything is not as it seems, and Anne will have to decide what to do about her feelings for Adam once again.
I couldn't wait to read this book because I love a good retelling of Jane Austen novels. I did enjoy the book overall, but there were a few things that bothered me, hence the four star rating. I thought all of the profanity was totally unnecessary. The book would've been so much better without it. I also thought the side plot of Anne's best friend Larry's affair with a male movie star was excessive and forced in to provide diversity. I liked the rest of the novel and loved the romance between Adam and Anne. The book made me laugh out loud multiple times and provided me with plenty of comic relief. I was also very satisfied with the ending and I thought this book was well done overall.
Many thanks to Gallery Books and Bookish First for the ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
