This is just an initial impression based on the "first look," but I'm loving the premise. Julia Sonneborne has fully set the scene of this amazing little enclave of New England Ivy in California. I couldn't imagine having an ex of that importance suddenly reentering my life in such a way. Anne is an amazingly relatable character, and I found myself immediately sympathizing with her as a teacher and as a human.
I am enamored with the simplicity of Sorbonne's writing, and ability to transport the reader into the room with Anne. The mixed media that Sonneborne has included - such as the emails - have a lovely way of grounding the novel in reality, and making me implicit in her journey of discovery of how to live with these new circumstances.
