I wanted to read By the Book because it is supposed to be a modern retelling of Persuasion by Jane Austen, which is my favorite of her novels. However I did not particularly feel like it was a retelling at all. Don't get me wrong, it was a nice, fun read, and there were some similarities to Persuasion. But not really enough to qualify it as a retelling in my eyes, parts even felt more like she was aiming for Pride and Prejudice. I did like the authors writing style and how you could tell she is definitely a bibliophile like me! I really enjoy when authors do some bookish name dropping in their stories, it feels like they're recommending books to you. I wasn't crazy about the ending, it felt like the author wanted to solve everything really quickly, and through one conversation. When the main character is talking to her love interest it didn't sound very convincing, a little too perfect I suppose. Overall I did enjoy reading the book and will definitely recommend it to my bookish friends!
