Jack is a detective who has lost his drive and enthusiasm about his work. He is still going through the motions but there is no passion in it. Meanwhile his wife works an alternate schedule from him, so they are more like ships in the night, passing but rarely having time to be together. One day Jack gets a call to come see his parents about some bad news. It is then that Jack's whole life begins to be transformed. Jack suddenly has a passion and a purpose, and when that passion and purpose are interwoven into the mystery that he is thrown into at work, it begins to consume him. The book is a mystery but it is also an exploration into self, the importance of our roots, but also the need to keep on going despite the difficulties and challenges that one may face.

I really enjoyed this book. It was a bit more straightforward than I generally prefer in regards to mysteries, as it was fairly clear as to who "did it" from early on. But I did enjoy the tangled web of how and why it happened. And more than that, I enjoyed unraveling the character of Jack.
