La Plante's newest novel is off to a quick start. In the space of about 20 pages we already have a full cast of characters and several mysteries. What were all of the women planning in the first scene? Who is the body in the old cottage? Who started the fire and why? Will the crux of the story focus on the character development of Jack Warr or will we get equal time with all of the introduced characters?

I think readers are going to love being dropped right in the middle of all of these questions. No slow build, just bam! The setting is idyllic for the moment, with the option to go darker when the time comes. The characters are realistic and I look forward to getting to know them better as the book progresses. I've never read a full La Plante novel, only having seen a few First Looks on here, but this one has intrigued me the most of all of them so far.
