People process grief in different ways but there seems to be one common denominator - it is not a linear process. Break This House was an emotional take on a teenager’s inner struggle after hearing that her estranged mother has passed away. Though I haven’t lost a parent, I have lost an estranged brother so I was looking forward to seeing these thoughts and feelings played out on paper. For me, I just couldn’t get into the book and had to DNF halfway through. I think that is largely due to my age gap between myself and the protagonist. There were moments I related to her grief but more moments when I didn’t. However, I think this is a very powerful novel that is an important read for traditional YA demographics. Death and all that follows is something society has a hard time dealing with. Starting a conversation about it is the first step in normalizing the complexity that comes with it and for this I applaud the author.
