Break this House is a book by Candice Iloh who I've heard good things about. This is a YA contemporary book written in beautiful prose. We follow our main character Yaminah, a sixteen year old girl. Years ago now she left her family in Michigan and now lives with her dad in Brooklyn. She finds a Facebook message inviting her to a family reunion to honor who mother that just died from cancer and memories come flooding back that Yaminah has to deal with. I read the book in one sitting. My parents grew up in Brooklyn so I've been there a lot and connected deeply with the setting and how it was described. I also really empathized with the main character and her grief and the strained family relationships/dynamics she has. This is a coming of age book that tackle grief, mental health, racism and more. I also loved that the main character was a vegetarian!
