Body Language - what a fitting title for a collection of twelve short stories that reveal human wants, needs, desires, and disappointments. What is really likable about MacDonald's writing is how realistic it is. I felt like her stories could have been about my neighbor, a family member, or a stranger I encountered on the road yet couldn't forget. MacDonald's characters are straight-forward yet not oversaturated to the point of thinking of them as only characters in a story. I felt like I knew them and felt their struggles through life along with them. The diction helped the drama where certain words and choice of fewer words moved the stories along without causing them to feel short or underdeveloped. MacDonald obviously has great empathy for the common human and sought to tell 'average' stories as a way to connect to readers who have the same doubts, fears, and flaws to her characters.
