Read the series in order
I read this book because it was an exciting mystery set in London, featuring some West End theatre, and written by an award winning author. It is a great thriller—no doubt about it.
However, I did not realize when I picked this book up that it is part of a long-standing series. Some novels can be read alone even if they are part of a series. In my opinion, this is not one of those novels.
For one thing, there’s not much of a hook at the beginning. The author expects the reader to jump right in because he or she is already attached to that lead character, which is completely understandable. However, I didn’t have an attachment, so it took me a very long time to really get interested in reading this.
There are several references made to previous books as well, and some characters aren’t completely fleshed out because they’ve already been well explained in previous books.
I’m giving this five stars because it’s not the book’s fault that I didn’t realize it was a sequel, but if you plan to read it, make sure you’ve read the others.
