The vicious murder of a theatrical agent kicks off an investigation into murder, drugs, and prostitution in the sixth installment of the Jane Dennison series. Jane also struggles to redeem herself from a previous failure, while dealing with interfering detectives and possible corruption.
As this is the first book I've read by this author, I don't have the history with the series and was therefore jumping in a little lost. I'd recommend having read the others first.
I found it odd that the staff is supposedly so upset at the victim's death, when all other indications are that he wasn't a nice person. Obviously he has many sides but it was kind of a disconnect with such a variance.
The plot moved a bit slowly, though I suspect the process was actually more in line with a true homicide investigation than is portrayed in many works of fiction. The characters go down several avenues of investigation to come to a realistic conclusion.
I appreciated the note at the end about the real-life history that inspired a secondary case. It makes the story more interesting for me and really makes things come alive.
Overall, a decent book but one needs to have read the previous books for maximum enjoyment.
