Consider me hooked!

I haven't read the first two books in this series, but I really need to now. The language is smooth, and I'm intrigued by the characters and the worldbuilding. My only little complaint would be the number of different storylines. If I counted right, there were four different storylines—six different POVs—in just this short excerpt, and perhaps this is because I didn't have any previous attachment to these characters, but I felt a bit tossed around and overwhelmed. But I really did like what I read, and I'll have to check the series out for sure.
